Immigrant Stateside Disaster Relief
The National Immigration Law Center publishes a Guide to Immigrant Eligibility for Federal Programs. www.nilc.org Most of which applied to lawful permanent residents (green card), those in asylum, refugees and some paroles. Some of the listed programs are the following:
- (FEMA) Federal Emergency Management Agency which provides assistance related to housing including, temporary housing, repair money, rental and mortgage assistance for those with economic hardship.
- (DUA) Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Department of Labor program provides unemployment benefits.
- (IFGP) Individual & family Grant Program, Office of Emergency Services offers money grants for items lost other than housing and can include medical expenses, job essentials and funeral costs.
In addition, look to your states programs such as food banks or food programs and the Small Business Administration. Better to assume you qualify for every available relief and apply, even if later rejected, than to not apply at all.
Generally, accepting aid during a crisis or disaster will not deem you a "public charge."
