
F-1 Visa Student Work Eligibility
During the first year of studies, work is permitted on campus only subject to certain conditions and restrictions. Beginning the second year, work is permitted on campus or off campus with 3 types of off campus employment;
- Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
- Optional Practical Training (OPT), and
- STEM-OPT Extension
A very narrow work exception allows F-1 visa holders to work to support oneself based on financial need. In addition, Haitian and Libyan students enjoy special work privileges because of unforeseen economic necessity.
